One of them is the Bowie/Mott version of All the Young Dudes that had previously been available only on the Mott the Hoople box set All the Young Dudes - The Anthology and on bootleg CDs. There is also a version with Bowie singing the chorus, available, for instance, on the C'est la Vie bootleg box. |

David Bowie: Let's Dance (EMI 7805; USA 02/2007) Format: 12" Release notes: pirate release, 33 1/3 rpm, white NC Tracks: Let's Dance (album version) // Fame (Jazzy Jay remix)* Other notes: *not listed as remix on the label
Collector's notes: Although this disc contains officially released tracks, it obviously is a pirate issue. The coupling of the tracks is unlikely, especially because the record has the catalogue number of the original US 12" issue of Let's Dance - which had a different B-side. Another clear
indicator that this must be a pirate release is the catalogue number of the Young Americans album given on the label, which is the original RCA number - a catalogue number under which the album hadn't been available for about twenty years! Despite all these absurdities the record got an (equally unofficial) re-release in 2020! |
Mislay vs. Coolio & Bowie: Gangsta's Revenge/Pussy on Fire ((LRRFO1); ?? 03/2007) Format: 12" Release notes: pirate release, white labels with artist/title sticker, white NC Tracks: Mislay vs. Coolio: Gangsta's Revenge (Where's My Weapon mix) // Mislay vs. Bowie: Pussy on Fire (Where's My House mix)* Other notes: *remix of Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (original version) Collector's notes: Another superfluous bootleg remix of a poor, harmless Bowie track. Note that the remixer's name on the sticker appears to be mis-spelt: it is actually "Misslay"! |
David Bowie: Glass Spider (EMI 094639100224; EU 06/2007) Format: 2CD/DVD Release notes: limited edition, broad transparent DVD-box with insert, additional insert CD tracks: Intro: Up the Hill Backwards / Glass Spider / Up the Hill Backwards (reprise)* / Day-In Day-Out / Bang Bang / Absolute Beginners / Loving the Alien / China Girl / Rebel Rebel / Fashion / Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) / All the Madmen / Never Let Me Down // Big Brother/Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family* / '87 and Cry / "Heroes" / Sons of the Silent Age / Time Will Crawl / Young Americans / Beat of Your Drum / The Jean Genie / Let's Dance / Fame / Time / Blue Jean / Modern Love DVD tracks: Intro: Up the Hill Backwards / Glass Spider / Up the Hill Backwards (reprise)* / Day-In Day-Out / Bang Bang / Absolute Beginners / Loving the Alien / China Girl / Rebel Rebel / Fashion / Never Let Me Down / "Heroes" / Sons of the Silent Age / band introduction / Young Americans / The Jean Genie / Let's Dance / Time / Fame (incl. Lavender Blue*) / Blue Jean / I Wanna Be Your Dog / White Light/White Heat / Modern Love Other notes: CD tracks recorded live, Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Canada, 30/08/1987; DVD tracks recorded live, Entertainment Center, Sydney, 07 and 09/11/1987; *tracks not listed on cover Collector's notes: A splendid release! The DVD had been available on VHS before (as Glass Spider vol.1 and vol.2), and the show on the CDs is the one that had once been circulating as a promo-CD set and had finally ended up on the great Bon Soir Montreal vinyl bootlegs. Note that there is some confusion as regards the exact date of the recording of the DVD. According to Pegg, most of the material was recorded on 06/11/1987, but this release gives the above dates. I will keep the official dates for this and subsequent releases. |

David Gilmour: Remember that Night - Live at the Royal Albert Hall (EMI CDEMDJ 732/50999 507732 2 0; EU 09/2007) Format: CDS Release notes: promo-only, cardboard cover Tracks: Wish You Were Here / The Blue / Comfortably Numb* Other notes: live, Royal Albert Hall, London, 29/05/2006; *vocals by David Bowie and David Gilmour Collector's notes: This is one of the two promo-only CD singles that are the only available audio source of the Bowie/Gilmour duet of Comfortably Numb. |
David Bowie: Reality ((Full Force Records 72534E1/A 72534E2/A); UK 2007) Format: LP Release notes: pirate release, white vinyl, black NC Tracks: New Killer Star / Pablo Picasso / Never Get Old / The Loneliest Guy / Looking for Water / She'll Drive the Big Car // Days / Fall Dog Bombs the Moon / Try Some, Buy Some / Reality / Bring Me the Disco King Other notes: some tracks have a defective sound source Collector's notes: The record sounds as if it skipped on some tracks. So either they used a defective CD as the source, or this is a particularly brutal way of editing the songs, so that they all fit onto a vinyl LP... Also note the poor quality printing of the labels. I've read that this release was limited to 250 copies, but I can't say if this is true. |

David Bowie: Low (Casa Grande Oro 104/1992; Mexico? 2007) Format: LP Release notes: pirate release, picture disc, plastic NC Tracks: see original issues Other notes: re-issue of 1977 album
Collector's notes: I once read that this is a Mexican release. However, it has also been claimed that it was actually made in the UK. Since it was easily available in Europe, this might be true. It's a pirate release, so I simply don't know. |

David Bowie: Hunky Dory (Black Rose BR 2; France 2008) Format: LP Release notes: pirate release, picture disc, plastic NC Tracks: see original issues
Other notes: re-issue of 1971 album. Note that this LP, unlike other pirate picture discs from that time, copies the design of the official Hunky Dory picture disc, released in 1984. |
David Bowie: Low (RCA INTS 5065; UK? 2008) Format: LP Release notes: pirate release, red vinyl, white NC, limited edition of 100 Tracks: see original issues Other notes: re-issue of 1977 album
Collector's notes: When this LP turned up on the market in 2008 there was some fuss about it, since there was a bit of confusion about the question of whether it was an "original" or not. There are very limited coloured vinyl issues of some Bowie records on RCA (such as the purple Scary Monsters
LP or the green D.J. 7"). In fact, there also seems to be a red vinyl pressing of Low with the green labels (from the 1980s, judging from the label design). Like the purple Scary Monsters the (original) red vinyl copies of Low were probably made by fans working at the pressing plant. However, original RCA International labels have a glossy green colour - not the pale green as the labels of this record. A simpler criterion to distinguish this fake from the "original" is the position of the RCA logo - on genuine copies it's on the left, not at the top. Moreover, I've read that the "original" red pressings (of the green label re-issue) have different matrix numbers. The matrix numbers of this fake re-pressing are 76061E1/A and 76061E2/B. |
David Bowie: iSelect (EMI/Upfront UPDB001; UK 06/2008) Format: CD Release notes: promo, free with "Sunday Mail", cardboard cover Tracks: Life on Mars? / Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise) / The Bewlay Brothers / Lady Grinning Soul / Win / Some Are* / Teenage Wildlife / Repetition / Fantastic Voyage / Loving the Alien / Time Will Crawl (MM remix)** / Hang On to Yourself*** Other notes: all tracks from the original albums, except: *from the 1991 re-issue of Low; **original version with new instrumental overdubs; ***live, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, California, 20/10/1972 |
David Bowie: Live Santa Monica '72 (EMI BOWLIVE 201072LP; UK 06/2008) Format: 2LP Release notes: 2 OIS, poster Tracks: see 1994 issue Other notes: live, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, California, 20/10/1972; re-issue of Santa Monica '72 (1994) Collector's notes: And finally, after countless bootlegs and semi-legal releases, a fully legal and official Santa Monica release saw the light of day. It is similar to the 1994 issue, in that it has the announcer's voice, but omits the Beethoven intro. However, there is at least one further difference: some of the interaction with the audience before My Death has been edited out. I might not have noticed all such minor differences. |

David Bowie: Glass Spider Live (Immortal IMA 104212; Netherlands 11/2008) Format: 2CD Release notes: bootleg, multi-fold-out digipak Tracks: Intro: Intro: Up the Hill Backwards* / Glass Spider / Up the Hill Backwards (reprise)* / Day-In Day-Out / Bang Bang / China Girl / Absolute Beginners / Rebel Rebel / Fashion / Never Let Me Down // "Heroes" / Sons of the Silent Age / Young Americans / The Jean Genie / Let's Dance / Time / Fame (incl. Lavender Blue*) / Blue Jean / I Wanna Be Your Dog / White Light/White Heat / Modern Love Other notes: live, Entertainment Centre, Sydney, 07 and 09/11/1987; *not listed on cover Collector's notes: This semi-legal CD set is the soundtrack to the DVD of the Glass Spider box. Perfect sound and also available on vinyl. |

Various Artists: War Child Heroes - The Ultimate Cover Versions Album (Parlophone 50999 244075 7 1; EU 02/2009) Format: 15 x 7" Release notes: partly 45 rpm, partly 33 1/3 rpm, one 7" 1-sided, box with sticker on shrinkwrap Tracks (disc 6; Parlophone 50999 693987 7 3, 33 1/3 rpm): TV on the Radio: "Heroes" // David Bowie: "Heroes" (long English version) Collector's notes: This box is a bit of a borderline case for Bowie collectors: I do not normally collect albums that don't contain any exclusive Bowie tracks, but the vinyl version contains a Bowie 7" - and I do collect Bowie singles. Very often, this single is sold separately. Sadly, although the "Heroes" might have given its name to the entire set, the pressing quality of exactly this 7" is far from perfect. The record sticks once on the Bowie side, which is a pressing error, since I have come across two copies with exactly the same fault. |

Benassi vs. Bowie: D.J. (The Remixes Part 1) (d:vision DVR 572.09; IT 03/2009) Format: 12" Release notes: promo-only, side 2: 33 1/3 rpm, company cover Tracks: D.J. (Planet Funk remix) // D.J. (Alex Gopher remix) / D.J. (Rivaz Funk remix) Other notes: remixes of D.J. Collector's notes: Taken together, the two D.J. promos give you almost 45 minutes of remixes of this single track. Decide for yourself if you need them or not... |
Benassi vs. Bowie: D.J. (The Remixes Part 2) (d:vision DVRR 572.09; IT 04/2009) Format: 12" Release notes: promo-only, 33 1/3 rpm, company cover Tracks: D.J. (Alex Gaudino & Jason Rooney remix) / D.J. (eSquire remix) // D.J. (Mobbing remix) / D.J. (original vocal mix) Other notes: remixes of D.J. Collector's notes: Part 2 of this "indispensable" set. |
David Bowie: VH1 Storytellers (EMI 5099996490921; EU 07/2009) Format: CD/DVD Release notes: digipak with booklet and back inlay, wraparound cardboard box CD tracks: Life on Mars? / Rebel Rebel (truncated) / Thursday's Child / Can't Help Thinking about Me / China Girl / Seven / Drive-In Saturday / Word on a Wing DVD tracks: Life on Mars? / Rebel Rebel (truncated) / Thursday's Child / Can't Help Thinking about Me / China Girl / Seven / Drive-In Saturday / Word on a Wing / Survive / I Can't Read / Always Crashing in the Same Car / If I'm Dreaming My Life Other notes: live, Manhattan Center, New York, 23/08/1999 Collector's notes: Finally, an official release of the audio material that had already been available on the bootleg CD Storyteller and Beyond. But it is a bit odd that the DVD bonus performances have been left off the extremely short audio CD... |
David Bowie/Nick Perito: Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (Warner Brothers W818 7-520888; UK 08/2009) Format: 7" Release notes: PS Tracks: David Bowie: Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (single edit)* // Nick Perdito: The Green Leaves of Summer Other notes: *original 1982 version. Collector's notes: From Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds soundtrack. This single was exclusively distributed by HMV stores. |
David Bowie: David Bowie - 40th Anniversary (EMI DBSOLP 40/50999-307530-1-3; EU 10/2009) Format: LP Release notes: FOC, OIS, poster, sticker on front, limited edition Tracks: see original issue Other notes: re-issue of album David Bowie (1969) Collector's notes: By far the most faithful reproduction of Bowie's Philips album, including the fold-out cover, the original title and mock Philips labels. However, why didn't they include the bonus tracks on this release? The record has a fold-out cover anyway, so it wouldn't have been a problem to accommodate a second LP. But by and large, the bonus tracks are not particularly exciting... (see next entry). |

David Bowie: David Bowie - 40th Anniversary (EMI EMI DBSOCD 40; EU 10/2009) Format: 2CD Release notes: multi-fold-out digipak, booklet, insert on cover back, sticker on front, limited edition Tracks: Space Oddity / Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed* / Letter to Hermione / Cygnet Committee / Janine / An Occasional Dream / Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud / God Knows I'm Good / Memory of a Free Festival // Space Oddity** / An Occasional Dream** / Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud*** / Let Me Sleep beside You° / Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed° / Janine° / London Bye Ta-Ta°° / The Prettiest Star (original version)°°° / Conversation Piece (original version)°°° / Memory of a Free Festival (Part 1) (single version)# / Memory of a Free Festival (Part 2) (single version)# / Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud## / Memory of a Free Festival## / London Bye Ta-Ta### / Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola+ Other notes: disc 1 CD re-issue of album David Bowie (1969) (*includes Don't Sit Down); **demos with John Hutchinson, home recordings, Clareville Grove, London, 01/1969; ***single version with spoken intro, from the 1969 single, °The Dave Lee Travis Show BBC programme, Studio 2, Aeolian Hall, London, 20/10/1969; °°studio recording, Trident Studios, 01/1970, stereo version; °°°stereo versions, mono versions on the 1970 single; #from the 1970 single; ##alternative mixes of album versions; ###alternative stereo mix; +studio recording, Morgan Studios, 20/12/1969, full length stereo version
Collector's notes: The usual kind of cash-in anniversary release; the demo of Space Oddity is interesting, and so is that of An Occasional Dream. The rest is either well-known to long-time collectors or differs only marginally from the previously available versions. However, the
alternative stereo mix of London Bye Ta-Ta is actually an improvement and corresponds more to nowadays' listening habits than the "ping pong stereo" of the older stereo mix. |
