(Virgin DBPR72438 48157 2 0; Germany 02/2000)

David Bowie:

Hours...

(Virgin/EMI DBP 48157; Russia? 2000)

Format: LP

Release notes: pirate issue, yellow marbled vinyl, black NC with sticker, numbered edition: 501

Tracks: Thursday's Child / Something in the Air / Survive / If I'm Dreaming My Life / Seven // What's Really Happening? / The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell / New Angels of Promise / Brilliant Adventure / The Dreamers

Other notes: recorded at Seaview Studios, Bermuda, spring 1999, and Looking Glass Studios, New York, 24/05/1999

Collector's notes: A beautiful release that was available in different colours. Despite its official looks, it's a pirate issue. The sound quality is inferior to that of a regular release. According to the labels and the cover sticker, this LP was made in the UK, but I once read that it was a Russian pressing. I originally listed this release under 1999, but according to Discogs, it is from 2000, which actually sounds more plausible to me, because the Hours... CD wasn't released before October 1999.

David Bowie:

Liveandwell.com

((no number); USA 09/2000)

Format: CD/CDS

Release notes: limited edition, available only to Bowienet members, disc 2 contains interactive bonus material, jewel case with booklet and back inlay

Tracks: I'm Afraid of Americans* / The Hearts Filthy Lesson** / I'm Deranged*** / Hallo Spaceboy° / Telling Lies*** / The Motel*** / The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (as Beauty)° / Battle for Britain (The Letter)* / Seven Years in Tibet* / Little Wonder* // Fun (Dillinja mix)°° / Little Wonder (Danny Saber dance mix) / Dead Man Walking (Moby mix 1) / Telling Lies (Paradox mix)

Collector's notes: Originally, Bowie had planned to release a regular live album of the Earthling tour. However, the project was shelved, and, instead, this limited edition album was released only to members of Bowie's internet service Bowienet. It was the only official source of the weird track Fun until the release of Is It Any Wonder? in 2020.
According to official sources, The Hearts Filthy Lesson was recorded at the 1997 Phoenix Festival, but it's general consensus that the track is from the previous year (as the usually reliable Pegg also says).
The English Wikipedia claims that this release is an expanded re-issue of a 1999 single disc version. This can only refer refer to the fact that several (or all) of the live tracks had previously been available as downloads for Bowienet members. A single CD version has never been released. However, in 2021 the live disc was re-issued on vinyl.

Collector's notes: A vinyl release of Bowie at the Beep seems to have been originally projected, because Amazon Germany listed it for over a decade, but always with the status "currently unavailable". A pirate release turned up in 2012, and in 2016 an official release was finally realized.

David Bowie:

Space Oddity

(EMI/Simply Vinyl SVLP 263; France? (03/2001))

Format: LP

Release notes: counterfeit, 2 stickers on protective plastic cover

Tracks: see original issue

Other notes: re-issue of album David Bowie (UK issue, 1969)

Collector's notes: The album design is interesting in that it combines the original 1969 design of the Philips LP with the title of the 1972 re-issues. In fact, this is the main reason I bought it. The "Simply Vinyl" pressings correctly have the reputation of being high-quality pressings, but this one is of rather poor quality. I have read that there are French counterfeits of these pressings, and this is almost certainly one of them - which would explain the quality. Moreover, original copies of the "Simply Vinyl" releases have white labels (see here for an example), so it's very likely that this is not the real thing.
Although the record can be easily distinguished from the actual re-issue (by its black labels and the other differences mentioned), I classify it as a counterfeit rather than a pirate release. Back in the early 2000s there was less information available on the internet and new releases were not always internationally available. So many collectors might have been fooled by these black vinyl copies. In fact, for a long time I thought that they might be genuine. But any doubts about their nature disappeared when I received one...
The "Simply Vinyl" series of six LPs is interesting in that it was the only series of vinyl re-issues between 1990 and the 2010s. Other black label counterfeits exist of at least Hunky Dory (without black margin - see the note in the next entry), Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups. The latter two are listed as bona fide releases on Discogs.

David Bowie:

Hunky Dory

(EMI/Simply Vinyl SVLP 265; UK 03/2001)

Format: LP

Release notes: insert

Tracks: see original issue

Other notes: re-issue of album Hunky Dory

Collector's notes: Here is an example of an original album from the "Simply Vinyl" series. My copy lacks the original plastic wallet with seal and sticker.
There is an extremely rare alternative cover without the black margin. That design was quickly withdrawn and only a few copies are said to have survived. But beware! The withdrawn cover was counterfeited, too: if your mega-rarity has black labels, then there's something wrong with it...

Format: 2LP

Release notes: white label promo-only, white NC with sticker, insert

Tracks (Bowie): - // David Bowie and Massive Attack: Nature Boy* // Nature Boy** // -

Other notes: *studio recording, New York 02/2001; **studio recording, New York 2000 or 2001

Collector's notes: The back of the insert is plain white.
For a long time I hesitated to call this vinyl record a promo-only release, but since I haven't seen an (original) stock copy in decades, I don't think there was such an issue. In 2017, however, a commercial vinyl issue of this album was released in a cover that followed the original CD design.

Collector's notes: Compared to the CD version the vinyl issue is quite rare. However, since the track featuring Bowie isn't particularly interesting, it isn't a top-rarity.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - 30th Anniversary 2CD Edition

(EMI 7243 5 39826 2 1; EU 07/2002)

Release notes: bonus disc, book cover

Tracks: Five Years / Soul Love / Moonage Daydream / Starman / It Ain't Easy / Lady Stardust / Star / Hang on to Yourself* / Ziggy Stardust / Suffragette City / Rock'n'Roll Suicide // Moonage Daydream**+ / Hang On to Yourself** / Lady Stardust*** / Ziggy Stardust° / John, I'm Only Dancing°° / Velvet Goldmine°°° / Holy Holy# / Amsterdam## / The Supermen### / Round and Round++ / Sweet Head+++ / Moonage Daydream%

Other notes: CD re-issue of 1972 album with bonus tracks. *lacks the count-in; **performed by Arnold Corns, from the 1971 single (+spoken intro omitted); ***demo, Radio Luxembourg Studios, 09-10/03/1971; °demo, 1971; °°original version; °°°from the 1975 EP; #re-recorded version, longer fade-out; ##early mix, as on the 1990 re-issue of Pin Ups; ###from the Revelations various artists compilation (1972); ++alternative mix from the Sound + Vision box set; +++outtake from the Ziggy Stardust sessions, Trident Studios, 11/1971, longer edit than on the 1990 issues of the album; %new mix

Collector's notes: This second "deluxe" set of the album (after the 1990 box set) collects a lot of material from the Ziggy era, though none of it is really exciting. The longer versions of Sweet Head and Holy Holy are probably the most interesting tracks included.
However, the cover is really beautiful: it is a small book.

David Bowie:

(Murphy Records Ireland 006; ?? 2002)

Format: CD

Release notes: bootleg, digipak

Tracks: Fame / Changes / China Girl / Slow Burn / Starman / Let's Dance / Slip Away / Ziggy Stardust / "Heroes" / 5:15 The Angels Have Gone / Sound and Vision / Ashes to Ashes / I'm Afraid of Americans

Other notes: live, A&E Live by Request TV show, Sony Studios, New York City, 15/06/2002

Collector's notes: Since the show was taken from an official TV broadcast, the sound quality is excellent (except for a "tape glitch" at the beginning of China Girl). A vinyl version with even better sound quality was issued in 2014.

David Bowie:

Live at Olympia Music Hall

(Stardust Records; EU 2002)

Other notes: live, Olympia Music Hall, Paris, France, 01/07/2002

Collector's notes: Quite a good recording. Originally I wrote that it was an audience recording, since the sound quality is not as good as the official recording broadcast on French TV. However, on closer inspection I realized that it actually seems to have been taken from the TV source.

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)

(RCA AQL1-3647-3; Germany 2002)

Format: LP

Release notes: picture disc, pirate release, plastic NC

Tracks: see original issue

Other notes: re-issue of the 1980 album

Collector's notes: The first of numerous pirate picture discs and coloured vinyl re-issues that turned up in the following years.
Note that sellers sometimes add an original (but not necessarily appropriate, as regards the catalogue number) cover to copies of this record and offer them as "promos". This is nonsense, of course.

David Bowie:

Monsters to Ashes

(Canaletto Records SM 7980; ?? 2002)

Format: CD

Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with fold-out insert and back inlay

Tracks: It's No Game (Part 2) / Up the Hill Backwards / Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)* / Ashes to Ashes* / Teenage Wildlife / Scream like a Baby / Kingdom Come / Because I'm Young** / I Feel Free*** / Ashes to Ashes° / Life on Mars?° / The Man Who Sold the World°° / Boys Keep Swinging°° / TVC 15°° / Panic in Detroit°°° / I Am a Laser# / Tired of My Life## / Everyone Says 'Hi'###

Other notes: alternative versions from the Scary Monsters sessions, Power Station Studios, New York, early 1980 (**early version of Because You're Young, ***instrumental backing track, mistitled Is There a Life after Marriage? on cover); except: *alternative mix of the official version; °Tonight TV show, 03/09/1980; °°Saturday Night Live TV show, 15/12/1979, featuring Klaus Nomi; °°°re-recorded version, 12/1979; #performed by Ava Cherry and the Astronettes, produced by Bowie, studio recording, 11/1973; ##demo, Haddon Hall, 05/1970; ###live, Harald Schmidt Late Night TV show, Germany, 11/07/2002; partly incorrect titles and dates on cover

Collector's notes: Basically a re-issue of the Glamour bootleg CD (1998) (which was itself a re-issue of an earlier bootleg) with partly different bonus tracks. The sound quality of the Scary Monsters sessions tracks is inferior to that of the older release - which is quite odd in the age of digital copying.

David Bowie:

Come to Daddy

(DB BER2002; 2003)

Format: CD

Release notes: bootleg, digipak

Tracks: Cactus / Slip Away / I'm Afraid of Americans / 5:15 The Angels Have Gone / I've Been Waiting for You / "Heroes" / Heathen (The Rays) / Rebel Rebel / Survive / Alabama Song / Afraid / Everyone Says 'Hi' / Hallo Spaceboy

Other notes: *live, Max-Schmeling-Halle, Berlin, Germany, 22/09/2002

Collector's notes: Since this bootleg was recorded from a TV broadcast, the sound quality is, in principle, excellent. However, the CD has two serious flaws. First, there are several sound dropouts, most notably on Cactus. Second, Cactus has a lot of distortion, which makes it practically unlistenable and is due to digital artefacts in the sound wave. I can't say if these are the result of a poor digital mastering or pressing of the CD, or if they were already part of the digital recording. Be that as it may, for the most part it's a great album, but the flaws in it are a real pity.

Ziggy Stardust - The Motion Picture - 30th Anniversary 2LP Special Edition

(EMI 7243 5 41979 1 8; EU 03/2003)

Format: 2LP

Release notes: limited edition: number 5.996, red vinyl, FOC, 2 OIS, poster

Tracks: Intro / Hang on to Yourself / Ziggy Stardust / Watch That Man / Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud / All the Young Dudes / Oh! You Pretty Things // Moonage Daydream / Changes / Space Oddity / My Death // Intro / Cracked Actor / Time / The Width of a Circle // Let's Spend the Night Together / Suffragette City / White Light/White Heat / Farewell Speech / Rock'n'Roll Suicide

Other notes: live, Odeon Hammersmith, London, 03/07/1973, re-issue of 1983 album with remixed tracks and corrected running order

Collector's notes: An almost perfect version of Ziggy's farewell show. I say "almost" because the two tracks featuring Jeff Beck ('Round and 'Round and The Jean Genie/Love Me Do) are still missing. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant release, especially because of the vinyl version in red vinyl.
But for another twenty years we still had to wait for a release that finally included the tracks featuring Beck.

Collector's notes: The Illustrated db Discography lists this a French release. This may be true, the B-side label doesn't give an exact country of manufacture, but only says "Made in the EU". But then again, it also says "EMI Records UK". So, for the time being, I'll keep listing this as a UK release.

David Bowie:

Format: CDS

Release notes: slim case with insert

Tracks: (video: New Killer Star (video version)) / (video: Reality (EPK)) / Love Missile F1 Eleven*

Other notes: *audio-only track, recorded during the Reality sessions, 2003

Collector's notes: Another failed format - the DVD single. While most people were even happy with the sound of mp3-files compressed to 128 kbps and taken from the internet, the record industry was looking for new ways of earning money.

David Bowie:

Reality

(Columbia/Iso COL 512555 9; Austria 09/2003)

Collector's notes: It was quite common by now to release an album in a multitude of formats. Only two months after the first issue, this one came out with a different bonus track and a pleasant DVD.

David Bowie:

I Dig Everything - The 1966 Pye Singles

(Earmark/Get Back 42022; Italy 11/2003)

Format: LP

Release notes: FOC in plastic wallet with sticker

Tracks: see UK issue

Other notes: 12" re-issue of UK 10" album (2000)

Collector's notes: By now, I Dig Everything was available in all common vinyl formats: 7" box set, 10", and 12" LP. But unlike former Italian re-issues of UK releases, this one was by no means a cheap budget issue.

David Bowie:

Magic Dance

(DBD 001; UK 12/2003)

Format: 12"

Release notes: promo-only, plain white labels, black NC with artist/title sticker

Something Really Fishy

(DBGA1; Germany 2003)

Format: CD

Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with fold-out insert and back inlay

Tracks: The Enemy Is Fragile / Unknown 1: I Am with Name/"Hide Me"/We'll Creep Together / Unknown 2: "Hide Me"/We'll Creep Together / Unknown 3: "I'd Rather Be Chrome" / Unknown 4: "The First Time"/"I'd Rather Be Chrome"/We'll Creep Together / Unknown 5: I Am with Name/"Hide Me"/We'll Creep Together

Other notes: recorded during the first part of the 1. Outside sessions, Mountain View Studios, Montreux, Switzerland, 03-11/1994

Collector's notes: This was a great bootleg - at the time of its release, that is. With sound collages like these, you could really understand how the tracks from the Outside album had been "assembled". Some bits and pieces actually turn up on the final album, but for the most part, the "songs" of this disc are unreleased stuff - hard stuff! For the most part, the sound quality is excellent. There are only two tracks on the album for which the titles are known, The Enemy Is Fragile, confirmed by Reeves Gabrels, and We'll Creep Together. The other titles (in quotation marks) are only "mock titles" and only partly identical to those on the cover, since I've added what I could identify. By and large, the "songs" are fragments flowing into each other, with some recurring themes.
With hindsight a bit of critique is necessary. Originally, about 70 minutes from these sessions were leaked on CDR, and were subsequently distributed on the internet. Those files were split into several shorter parts, and, obviously, this bootleg (like others following) collected whatever could be found - leading to omissions and repetitions. The full set was finally released on 1.0 Wishful Beginnings, which made this CD obsolete. See the entry of that album for a more careful "track listing".

David Bowie:

Vancouver Station

Release notes: bootleg, digipak

Tracks: Station to Station / Suffragette City / Waiting for the Man / Word on a Wing / Stay / TVC 15 / Sister Midnight / Life on Mars? / Five Years / Panic in Detroit / Fame / Changes / Queen Bitch / Rebel Rebel

Other notes: rehearsals for the 1976 tour, Vancouver, Canada, 02/02/1976

Collector's notes: A great document. This recording (of which the film version also circulates as a DVD on the web) is in excellent sound quality and has the highest-quality 1976 version of the elusive Sister Midnight that I know of.

David Bowie:

A Reality Tour

Collector's notes: Nothing exciting, but perfect sound.
