With the exception of I Feel Free, all songs have a very good sound quality. Especially the inclusion of Footstompin' in excellent sound quality makes this record interesting. |

Nice, but superfluous. |

David Bowie: The Hearts Filthy Lesson (BMG/Arista 74321-31807 2; Germany 09/1995) Format: 3"CDS Release notes: shaped picture CD, jewel case with back inlay Tracks: The Hearts Filthy Lesson (alt. mix) / The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Bowie mix) Collector's notes: Another failed CD format. The idea was good, since there had been vinyl shape discs for quite a while. The problem was that some CD-players had enormous difficulties to play such shaped CDs. |
David Bowie: Strangers When We Meet (BMG/RCA 74321329407; UK 11/1995) Format: 7" Release notes: green vinyl, limited edition, PS with sticker Tracks: Strangers When We Meet (edit) // The Man Who Sold the World* Other notes: *re-recorded version from the 1. Outside sessions, 1994-1995, not live, as claimed on the cover Collector's notes: Pegg claims that The Man Who Sold the World from the Birmingham show was used as a single B-side, which can only refer to this single. However, this can't be correct, since the single was released before the Birmingham show! This supports my assumption that the track on this single is actually a studio re-recording. |

David Bowie: Live. Inside (Kiss the Stone KTS 502/503; Italy 1996) Format: 2CD Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with multi fold-out insert and back inlay Tracks: Intro: Subterreneans/Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)* / Reptile* / Hallo Spaceboy* / Hurt* / Look Back in Anger / I'm Deranged / The Hearts Filthy Lesson / The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (as Beauty) / I Have Not Been to Oxford Town // Outside / Andy Warhol / Breaking Glass / The Man Who Sold the World / We Prick You / Joe the Lion / A Small Plot of Land / Nite Flights / band introduction / Under Pressure / Teenage Wildlife / Strangers When We Meet** Other notes: live, Riverport Amphitheater, St. Louis, USA, 11/10/1995, except: **Later... with Jools Holland TV programme, 02/12/1995; *performed by David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails Collector's notes: A great bootleg, representing the American leg of the Outside tour (with Nine Inch Nails). Since the recording was taken from a radio broadcast, the sound quality is excellent. However, it's a very strange mix even for a soundboard recording. It sounds extremely "dry" and the audience is practically edited out. Contrary to what I wrote before, Strangers When We Meet is not from London, but from the TV show listed above. |

Much of it had been quite common before, but many of the songs are in better sound quality than on the older vinyl bootlegs. And some tracks were quite surprising, for instance the full-length version of Lightning Frightning, Shadow Man (which was rather rare at the time), the alternative version of How Lucky You Are and the Ziggy-recording of Looking for a Friend. |

David Bowie: Song for Berlin (Cooper Records Cooper 2; Luxemburg 1996) Format: CD Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with fold-out insert and back inlay, limited edition of 1.000 Tracks: Look Back in Anger / The Hearts Filthy Lesson / Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) / I Have Not Been to Oxford Town / Outside / Andy Warhol / The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (as Beauty) / The Man Who Sold the World / Diamond Dogs / Hallo Spaceboy / Breaking Glass / We Prick You / Nite Flights / band intro/White Light/White Heat / Moonage Daydream Other notes: live, Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany, 01/02/1996 Collector's notes: An audience recording in good sound quality. |

Collector's notes: The Loreley show, sometimes hailed as Bowie best show ever, was broadcast on German TV. Consequently, the sound quality is perfect. The sound of the bonus tracks is also very good to perfect. What is particularly interesting is the inclusion of a soundboard recording of Imagine. |

David Bowie: A Semi-Acoustic Love Affair (Gold Standard; USA 1996) Format: CD Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with insert and back inlay Tracks: Amsterdam / God Knows I'm Good / Buzz the Fuzz / Karma Man / London Bye Ta-Ta / An Occasional Dream / The Width of a Circle / Janine / Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud / Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed / Fill Your Heart / The Prettiest Star / The Cygnet Committee / Looking for a Friend* / How Lucky You Are* / Shadow Man* / Lightning Frightning** / Rupert the Riley*** / Tired of My life* / Don't Sit Down°/intro to Andy Warhol°°/Oh! The Paris Cinema show is still good, but the sound quality isn't much better than on the Janine bootleg. Some of the bonus tracks seem to be taken straight off the better Missing Links One Ziggy CD, the "medley" of sound snippets with the unlisted Oh! You Pretty Things is rather odd, and the sound of This Boy is still awful! |

David Bowie: Absolutely Rare ((no number); ?? 1996) Format: CD Release notes: bootleg, green print on disc (100 made), jewel case with insert and back inlay Tracks: My Death* / Sorrow** / Time** / Everything's Alright** / Space Oddity** / I Can't Explain** / The Jean Genie** / 1984/Dodo** / I Got You Babe**+ / Rebel Rebel° / Dodo°° / Can You Hear Me°°° / Right°°° / Somebody Up There Likes Me°°° / Golden Years° Other notes: *live, Music Hall, Boston, 01/10/1972; **from the 1980 Floor Show, Marquee, London, 18-20/10/1973 (+duet with Marianne Faithfull); °"dry mixes" for Top of the Pops BBC radio; °°duet with Lulu, basic track recorded during the Diamond Dogs sessions, Olympic Studios, 12/1973-01/1974; °°°alternative takes, Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, 08/1974
Collector's notes: A nice compilation in very good to great sound quality. The sound of the 1980 Floor Show tracks is better than on Dollars in Drag, although the mix is quite strange: the vocals are pushed to the foreground, so that the sound of the tracks is quite "thin". Obviously, this recording is a kind of "pre-broadcast mix" - the offending word goddamn is present in the lyrics of Time, although it was edited out in the actual broadcast. I Got You Babe is longer than the Dollars version, but the mix reveals all flaws in the vocals (especially those of Faithfull). So I prefer the edited different mix from the vinyl album - which, like other the other songs, was later available in better quality on the The Collaborator bootleg CD set. |

Ziggy Stardust was the first in a long line of such re-releases of Bowie records, all in super-heavy vinyl and so on. However, for best sound quality, buy a solid original pressing, like the British or German ones. Heavyweight vinyl doesn't always guarantee a good pressing! |

David Bowie: Little Wonder in Paradiso (DB10697; Germany? 1997) Format: CD Release notes: bootleg, jewel case with fold-out insert and back inlay Tracks: Quicksand / Seven Years in Tibet / Fashion / Fame / Looking for Satellites / Telling Lies / Hallo Spaceboy / Stay / Little Wonder / Queen Bitch*° / Waiting for the Man*° / Dirty Boulevard*° / White Light/White Heat*° / Space Oddity* Other notes: live, Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 10/06/1997, except: *live, Madison Square Garden, New York, 09/01/1997, °featuring Lou Reed
Collector's notes: Considered out of context this was a brilliant bootleg: since all tracks are taken from radio broadcasts the sound quality is as excellent as it can get. With hindsight this not particularly rare release was less exciting. Three of the nine tracks from the Amsterdam show were later officially released on the official (albeit rare) Liveandwell.com album, and the "Birthday Show" songs were also released on Save the Children and numerous other bootlegs following that release. |

David Bowie: Kingdom Come (Budkon 1451; Russia 199?) Format: 5" flexi Release notes: mono, yellow flexi, 1-sided, wraparound PS Tracks: Ricochet (edited version)
Collector's notes: Budkon was a Russian pirate label that released a lot of flexis by Western artists. The records are all in mono and have a terrible sound quality - they are mere collector's items. Moreover, only very short songs are full-length versions; most songs are drastically edited. The "covers" are simple photocopied wraparound sleeves, and the discs are often available in different colours. The "labels" always have the same general design. The only difference is the colour, which depends, of course, on the colour of the disc. I will not show the "label" for all of the discs. |

Format: 5" flexi Release notes: mono, green flexi, 1-sided, wraparound PS Tracks: The Width of a Circle (edited version) Collector's notes: In the case of a long song like The Width of a Circle the drastic editing of the songs on these Russian flexis is particularly obvious... |

David Bowie: Song for Bob Dylan (Budkon 9769; Russia 199?) Format: 5" flexi Release notes: mono, clear flexi, 1-sided, mis-pressing with wrong track, wraparound PS Tracks: Song for Bob Dylan (edited version) Collector's notes: According to the cover and the label, this one should play Panic in Detroit, but it's Song for Bob Dylan. The funny thing is that this was the second time that Song for Bob Dylan appeared on a mis-pressed record: in 1983 it had accidentally replaced Queen Bitch on some copies of the Rebel Rebel single from the Lifetimes series. |

David Bowie: Moonage Daydream (Morgot Records 005; Poland 199?) Format: 5" soundcard Release notes: 33 1/3 rpm, size 16.5 x 14 cm Tracks: Moonage Daydream
Collector's notes: The Polish sound postcards on the Morgot label are similar to the Russian Budkon flexis, and are probably also from the 1990s (I couldn't find any more exact information). They consist of a transparent flexi disc glued to a colour cardboard sheet. On the back there is a sticker or a stamp with some copyright information and the artist and title in handwriting. The size of the cards varies, but the playing surface is always 5 1/3 inches (13.5 cm) in diameter. |

Format: 5" soundcard Release notes: 33 1/3 rpm, size 16 x 13.5 cm, mis-pressing with wrong track Tracks: Lady Stardust Collector's notes: According to the information on the front and the back of the card, this one should play Five Years. |
David Bowie: Hunky Dory (EMI 7243 8 21449 1 5; UK 10/1997) Format: LP Release notes: "EMI 100" series, sticker on cover, insert Tracks: see original issue Other notes: re-issue of 1971 album

Nothing exciting on it, but it was nice to have Shadow Man and Dodo (with Lulu) on vinyl. This album was one of the few vinyl bootlegs by Bowie that were released between the early 1990s and the early 2010s. On Bassman's David Bowie Page Frifelt even wondered if this would be the last Bowie vinyl bootleg ever. Fortunately, he was wrong! |

David Bowie: I Can't Read (ZYX/Velvel 8757-8; Germany 12/1997) Format: CDS Release notes: CD single case with insert Tracks: I Can't Read (short version)* / I Can't Read (long version)* / This Is Not America** Other notes: *re-recorded version from the Earthling sessions, Looking Glass Studios, New York, 1996, with altered lyrics for the movie The Ice Storm; **performed by David Bowie/Pat Metheny Group
Collector's notes: There are three different studio solo versions of I Can't Read. This version (let's call it the Ice Storm version) was the first that was officially issued (though not necessarily the first that was recorded). It has very prominent synthesizers in the chorus. A second version (I Can't Read '97) was officially released on Is It Any Wonder? in 2020. That version is basically identical, but the synths in the chorus are much less prominent. And finally, there is a "rehearsal version", which turned up on bootlegs like Birthday Celebration. This latter version has different lyrics ("When you see a famous smile...", as in the original Tin Machine version, instead of "Can I see the family smile...", as in the two other recordings). |

The lead vocal on It's Alright and the great song Henry and the H-Bomb is by Ian Hunter, and on the remaining three tracks it's by Stan Tippins (Mott the Hoople's tour manager and former singer). Neither Bowie nor Reed can actually be heard. The sound quality of the studio recordings is quite good, that of the Glasgow show is just acceptable. |

It's a great bootleg, giving some insight into the genesis of the Scary Monsters album. Even the early mixes of the officially released versions are quite interesting. The Scary Monsters stuff is in perfect sound quality, and the sound of the bonus tracks is also very good to perfect. Note that Cool Cat by Queen is identical to the official track, from which Bowie's backing vocals have been omitted. |

But it this case it worked. A great song! |
