To begin with, this index is by no means meant to cover all live, radio and TV performances by Bowie. As always, it only covers what happens to be in my collection!
Not covered are studio recordings proper, demos, studio jam sessions or impromptu performances not meant to be made available to a wider public, soundtrack recordings for TV shows that were basically non-musical (such as Baal or The Looking Glass Murders), and rehearsals (unless they were recorded for radio broadcast). I have included soundcheck recordings, though (there weren't many of them, anyway).
The index doesn't include references to each and every issue of a record. I usually included only links to the first issue in my collection. Alternative issues and re-releases are referred to only if the contents, the title, the sound quality or the format (CD/vinyl) has changed. I also considered only audio-only releases, disregarding DVDs.
In many cases, the records are put in brackets:
In the case of a full live show this means that only a small part of the performance is covered (say, less than eight to ten songs).
In the case of a radio session it means that the session is incomplete, that is, that not all of the songs (or all of the songs that are known to have survived) are included.
And in the case of a TV performance it again means that not all songs originally performed are included.
After all, I don't want to define die-hard criteria for these brackets here. They are only meant to give a rough orientation. In case of doubt, click on the link and see what's on the record!
I have also added stars to some of the records. If there are several competing releases covering the same performance, the stars indicate the records that are the best from my strictly subjective (!) point of view (in terms of completeness and/or sound quality). If there are roughly equivalent CD/vinyl version, I have marked both.
And, finally, I have added stars to releases which I simply consider to be outstanding (again, in terms of completeness and/or sound quality, and from a strictly subjective point of view). For the records marked with stars I have added notes to explain my choice. Click on the small number to jump to the explanation.
